The Character of the World

In the last article (The Kingdom of this World) we looked at this world’s Kingdom and in particular its ruler. A fallen angel, who in the Garden of Eden took over the rule of the world! Let’s now consider some of the world’s characteristics. As believers we need to be aware of them so their influence will not affect our lives.

Its evil character

In Galatians 1:4, Paul writes concerning our Lord Jesus, “who gave Himself for our sins. That He might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father.” This is a thrilling verse reminding us that not only did Jesus die for our sins (wonderful He did), but He saved us from the evil our sinful nature would have caused in our lives.

Every time we read or watch the news it is heart rending how evil this world has become. Yet in our hearts we should daily give praise to our Savior who has delivered us by His grace from being the instrument of the evil we might have become.

Paul reminds us in Ephesians 2:2, “We once walked according to the course of this world, according to the Prince of the Power of the air, the spirit that now works in the children of disobedience.”

Satan’s greatest work in human hearts causes disobedience to the authority of God and His Word! As believers, we should be careful we don’t adopt this spirit, but surrender to the Lordship of Christ by being obedient to the Word of God.

It is sad when those who profess faith in Christ are marked by disobedience and rebellion. Give yourself in complete obedience to Him!

Its materialistic snares

In the world today there is increasing pressure through the media and other means to focus on material things!  From advertisements, the lottery, get rich quick schemes, etc. What great temptations to pursue those things!

Paul says in 1 Timothy 6:9, “Those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts which drown men destruction and perdition. For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil.” (NKJV).

It is right and honorable to work and provide for our families! Also to those whom God has blessed with riches, the exhortation is, “Command those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty, nor trust in uncertain riches but in the living God, who gives us all things richly to enjoy. Let them do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to give, willing to share.” 1 Timothy 6:17-18 (NKJV).

The Work of the Lord and those in need have been blessed by dear believers whom God has endowed with riches. Many have given back to the Lord for the furtherance of the Gospel. We should all be rich in good works!

Its sensual philosophy

James 3:15 speaks of the wisdom of this world and says it is earthly, sensual, devilish. The world system has come to accept as normal the breakdown of the moral laws God has given for the blessing of humanity. Its promotion of the sensual is permeating the whole of society.

Christians on the other hand should be living lives which are honoring the Lord. This means chastity before marriage and fidelity in marriage. Everything outside of that God will judge (Hebrews 13:4). Only repentance and forgiveness can bring healing.

Its pressing cares

There are many more aspects to the world, but I will close with the words of the Lord Jesus in Mark 4:9, speaking of the thorns that choke the seed of the Word as “the cares of this world.”

I am sure this affects us all – the everyday pressure of just living in the world with its many demands and responsibilities!  Let’s take care we do not allow such pressures to hinder true spiritual joy and contentment.
